What Being Greek Means to…..

Being Greek means different things to different people. So I asked my friends in various sororities and fraternities what being Greek means to them. And this is what they said:

*Names have been changed for purpose of non bias.

Vanessa:

Being Greek means coming together with people who share the same core values as I do, but being diverse at the same time. Being unique but bonded by those same values. It also means always having someone beyond my bestfriends, [65] other girls who are they for me too. Coming from a home where I was an only child it was overwhelming at first but, it gets easy to get used to all of my new sisters and trust them.

Brooke:

Being in an organization where people genuinely care about you without even knowing who you are at first. I also feel being Greek is about being Panhellenic and loving people beyond your organization. It is your responsibility to care about people who share the same values as you.

Chase:

To me it’s having brothers to look up to and someone to aspire to be. I know these men have my back and in the end we always share our brotherhood beyond nothing else.

I love the quote:

“From the outside looking in, you can never understand it.

From the inside looking out, you can never explain it.” ~ Unknown

I think it’s true being Greek is something you have to experience for yourself but being Greek isn’t something that defines you, but rather you bring your individuality to the definition of being Greek. All of us come together to create this one image of being Greek.

So what do you bring to your definition?

Panhellenic or Greek Love in General

So’s here’s the common myth: sorority girls hate all other sororites.

False.

Above all else all Greek women share a common bond of being an active participant of a Greek organization to become better people.

So yes there will be friendly competition once in a while, but to bash another sorority just based on rumor or stereotype is damaging our Greek community as a whole.

We have to show the world, who already has negative views on us, that we are truly together as a community.

How can we expect the world to view of highly if all we do is present negative attitudes about each other? So I challenge you, make friends in every sorority. Find one good thing to say about them. Little things go a long way. Good luck.

White Parties: Do’s & Don’ts

First off, let me say I’m not the ultimate fan.
But regardless here on some tips on how to survive them.
Do wear a cute dress that flatter your figure.
Don’t wear your white DTP dress. Not at all classy or appropriate.
Do enhance the look with white accesories.
Don’t drown your face in white make-up so you look like a geisha.
Don’t wear something that you would be devasted to have drenched in unknown liquids.
Do wear cute colored shoes, why not make it fun?
Overall make good decisions. But don’t make just bad fashion choices just to fit this theme. Have a blast.

Congrats!

Congrats to all the PNMs who found their home during recruitment!

Congrats to everyone who just recieved new sisters!

This is such an exciting time from both sides!

I can’t wait for fall for our formal recruitment!!

PNMs tell me about your experiences and how you felt about recruitment so I can include your input in my blog. Even if you didn’t go Greek tell me how you felt and if it changes your mind about Greek life.

Actives tell me about your favorite memories.

Going through Recruitment

As you’re going through recruitment keep this in mind:

  • Am I comfortable representing this organization in all of its values and missions?
  • Am I deciding based on my friends or what the reputation this chapter has on campus?
  • Am I ready to put up with the constant battle of stereotypes and stigmas placed on people in the Greek Community?

Recruitment is something that you decide to go through. It is up to you and no one else. You have to feel with your whole heart that you want to be a part of a specific organization. You also have to keep an open mind. Don’t let negative views on a specific house change the way you feel about it. If the house that calls you back is the “lower tier” house, that is only based on someone else’s judgement. You decide your views on it. If you love that house, go for it. Forget what people think. That “lower tier” house can be the most liked at another school.

This process is to help you find a group of people who hold the same values as you and bring you together to achieve the same goals. It’s not about who’s cooler. It’s about who you can be yourself around. Finding that group that makes you feel at home.

So while you go through this overwhelming process, keep an open mind.

Don’t let anyone taint what you like.

And in the end of you don’t find the house of your dreams, it’s ok. It happens too. Nobody will shun you. You can still have friends who are Greek.

So best of luck during this exciting process. <3

aspence29:

I’m in a sorority. I’m blonde and skinny. So naturally that makes me a typical “sorostitute.” It means I love drinking and only joined a sorority for the frat boys and parties. I have no intentions of doing any kind of community service or helping others because, let’s face it, that cuts…

This is what it’s all about.

To not seem biased, even though I love my sorority, I will be disaffiliated just for the purpose of the blog. These experiences are my own and can hopefully diminish the negative view on Greeks. So any lingering questions feel free to ask.
